Striking Barcelona

Barcelona is an elegant and dynamic city situated on the n North-East of Spain, on the Mediterranean coast. Being a capital of the Catalan province, Barcelona is an outstanding city. Its the most visited destination in Spain and its second largest city (after Madrid). Barcelona is also one of the major European port cities.

Barcelona todays popularity began in 1987 when its native Juan Antonio Samaranch, the head of the International Olympic Committee announced that the Olympic Games 1992 would be held in Barcelona. The preparations to the games and its holding brought a huge income to Barcelonas treasury. Barcelona is also known as a popular resort destination, due to its proximity to Costa Dorada and Costa Brava.

Although Barcelona is a part of Spain, its main features could be called Mediterranean the city looks more like Marseille, for example, than like Madrid. The architecture of Barcelona sometimes reminds of Milan.
Barcelona is the most vivid, the busiest city of Spain. Barcelona citizens are known for their art of art, music and celebrations.

Barcelona was founded by the Romans about 2000 years ago. Since its very beginning it was a connecting-link between Spain and the rest of Europe. Roman Empire ruled here for six centuries. They established their culture, language, laws and religion here. Then Spain was conquered by Moors, Barcelona was among the first who with the help of Francs managed to get rid of yoke. About 988 AD Barcelona proclaimed its independence and during Middle Ages its power grew a lot. In XVIII century Madrid became the leading city of the peninsula and united all other cities. Barcelona became a part of Spain, but even now, several centuries later, many Barcelona citizens believe that one day Catalonia will become an independent state. Recently hold referendum confirmed this state of public opinion Catalonia is to receive more self-dependence.

The image of the modern Barcelona is mostly formed by Antonio Gaudi. Youll never see corners and direct lines in his masterpieces all they seemed to be made by nature and only too bright colors and windows with frames let guess that they are the creatures of a human being. Each of the structures built by Gaudi can be called the symbol of Barcelona, but his unfinished cathedral La Sagrada Familia shines bright even in the row of his masterpieces.

When you get to Barcelona you surely shouldnt miss a chance to walk along the streets of its oldest part Barri Gotic. Here are saved the houses of XIII_XV centuries. The charm of this place is completed with up-to-date streets and shops of the neighboring districts. Barri Gotic is also a home of the Royal Palace, reminding of once capital status of Barcelona.
