Travel to Scotland for New Year

If you're looking for a fun way to celebrate new year, head to Edinburgh so you can see in 2012 at Hogmanay. Thousands of people congregate here each year to have a great time - and you could be one of them this year.

The event starts on December 30th, offering every reason to book group accommodation for this date rather than just the 31st. A number of events will take place from this date up until the end of January 1st, so make sure you look into what's happening before you set off to ensure you know what you want to do and where to go when you arrive in Edinburgh.

If your break does start on the 30th, you'll be able to be one of the spectators at the wonderful Torchlight Procession, where thousands of torchbearers tread the city streets from the Royal Mile to the Son et Lumiere. This is where everyone congregates for the fireworks finale on Calton Hill.

On the following day, you'll have lots of options for the definitive way to celebrate the start of 2012.

You may well find you want to take part in The Keilidh, which is held outdoors as part of the Hogmanay Street Party. Here, you will be able to dance to your heart's content to the very best in traditional Scottish music.

You can learn all the moves thanks to the ceilidh caller and will have great views of the midnight fireworks, as well as be able to sample lots of local food and drink.

Prefer modern rock and pop to traditional Scottish melodies? You might want to head to the Concert in the Gardens instead. This spectacle of music and fireworks will feature a plethora of great acts this year, including Primal Scream playing their iconic 1991 album, Screamadelica, in its entirety.

The band will be joined on stage by Sons and Daughters, Bombay Bicycle Club and special guests Matt Norris and the Moon. Other artists due to play at this year's Hogmanay festivities include The Vaccines, CaperCaillie, Mark Ronson and The Cuban Brothers.

If you have the strength for it on January 1st, join the crowds and welcome 2012 by taking part in the annual Queensferry Loony Dook. This involves jumping into the River Forth, a tradition that dates back 25 years and has raised lots of cash for charities in the UK.

Just be warned - the river is rather cold at this time of year, so wrap up warm as soon as possible afterwards!
