'The Mother Of Macedonia' - Thessaloniki Greece

With the holiday season fast approaching, your attention may be turning to where to spend your hard-earned time off from work or studying. If you've got a budget in mind, but are unsure over whether you should holiday here in the UK or go overseas, this list may help. Here are 10 reasons why going abroad may be the best option.

1. The main reason why so many people take the decision to go abroad, rather than stay here in the UK is the weather. Many resorts in Spain, Portugal and Greece are chosen because there's a greater chance of gorgeous sunshine, making them the perfect option if you're keen to get the shorts or bikini on.

2. One of the benefits of the warm weather, and another reason why you may be keen to head overseas, is the opportunity to top up your tan. The consistently warm temperatures mean it's far more likely than here in the UK. However, it's vital to use high factor sun cream to avoid burning.

3. Another reason why going abroad could be a sensible option is for a complete change of scenery. A holiday in the UK, particularly if it requires you to drive, may not feel much of a departure from your normal life, whereas leaving your vehicle at the airport car park and heading off somewhere completely removed from routine could be far more appealing.

4. One of the best things about heading somewhere abroad that you've never been to before is the chance to explore your surroundings, take in local landmarks and soak up a different culture. The further from home you go, chances are the more fascinating an experience you'll get.

5. Part of experiencing that different culture is to try new foods. The local cuisine is one of the biggest factors in why people decide to go away, with Spanish, Italian and Greek food all very well thought of.

6. The warm ocean and sandy beaches found on the Mediterranean coast are two major draws for people looking for a week of relaxation and escapism. If you'd rather dip your toe into a sea that's warm, the 'Med' has to be worth considering.

7. Many tour operators provide fun excursions for holidaymakers, including boat trips and local tours. With so many new experiences to be had, it's clear to see why holidays abroad continue to be very popular.

8. Water Parks abroad tend to be spectacular and the chance to enjoy the cool, refreshing water in the warmth offered by the climate is too good to turn down for many fun-seeking holidaymakers.

9. Another reason why people love to head off to foreign destinations is the lure of the nightlife. Many cities and resorts are renowned for their party atmosphere, with bars, restaurants and nightclubs in abundance. If you're a party lad or gal, this could be a good enough reason to give it a try.

10. People not considering an overseas break tend to cite cost as the main reason. However, with so much choice, it's no longer the more expensive option. UK holidays can be much more pricey, while cheap flights, airport parking, hotels and transfers mean going abroad is a sensible option.
If you decide an overseas holiday is right for you, why not look for a great deal on airport parking? You can leave your vehicle in the airport car park and relax knowing it'll be safe and sound during your trip and convenient for when you return.

Taj Mahal A Symble of Love. Travel to India

India is one of the most beautiful monuments in the world. The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, as the mausoleum of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal, after her death in 1631. The Taj Mahal is recognized worldwide as a symbol of eternal love. Built of white marble and surrounded by green gardens, the Taj Mahal is a breathtakingly beautiful sight. The Taj Mahal is a UNESCO world Heritage site and is considered one of the wonders of the world and the supreme example of Mughal architecture in India. Taj Mahal stands on the bank of River Yamuna, which otherwise serves as a wide moat defending the Great Red Fort of Agra, the center of the Mughal emperors until they moved their capital to Delhi in 1637. It was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur in a campaign to crush a rebellion after giving birth to their 14th child. The death so crushed the emperor that all his hair and beard were said to have grown snow white in a few months.

Shah Jahan ascended the peacock throne of India in 1628, at the age of 36. By that time, he had been married to his second Persian wife for 16 years. Formally named Arjuman Banu Begum, she was more familiarly known as Mumtaz Mahal, or "beloved ornament of the palace". Not only was the Shah deeply in love with her, one of his many wives and concubines, so were the people, who knew her as generous, compassionate, and one of the most beautiful women in India. Within three years, their love story had ended. Mumtaz Mahal died on June 17, 1631 while accompanying the Shah during a battle campaign in Burhanpur in the Deccan (now in Madhya Pradesh) giving birth to her fourteenth child, a daughter named Gauhara Begum. So grief stricken was the Shah, that he withdrew from the public eye for an year, and when he emerged at the end of that time, although still a youthful 40, his hair had turned white and he appeared as an old man.

The beauty of this magnificent monument is such that it is beyond the scope of words. The thoughts that come into the mind while watching the Taj Mahal of Agra is not just its phenomenal beauty, but the immense love which was the reason behind its construction. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan got this monument constructed in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, with whom he fell in love at the first sight. Ironically, the very first sight of the Taj Mahal, the epitome of love and romance, also leaves visitors mesmerized and perpetually enthralled. It is white marble and semi-precious stones on the dome of the Taj that make Taj Mahal change colour during the day and on moonlit nights.Ustad Ahmad Lahori is believed to be the architect of Taj Mahal.

The rectangular base of Taj is in itself symbolic of the different sides from which to view a beautiful woman. The main gate is like a veil to a woman's face which should be lifted delicately, gently and without haste on the wedding night. In Indian tradition the veil is lifted gently to reveal the beauty of the bride. As one stands inside the main gate of Taj, his eyes are directed to an arch which frames the Taj.It was designed by the Iranian architect Ustad Isa and it is best appreciated when the architecture and its adornment

What to see and to do in Berlin

On the threshold of World Football Cup Berlin seems to be one of the most discussed cities on Earth. The preparations for the big football holiday are finished; hotels, bars and restaurants are counting their future income, the city lives waiting.

Not all of Berlin citizens are excited by this huge fest. Those, who can afford it, prefer to leave the city and to spend holidays in the neighboring Switzerland. Some bar owners declare their establishments free of football no matches broadcasts, not football discussions.

Whether you have arrived in Berlin for football or not, you will surely have an excellent chance to see the city of Berlin a very interesting city with long history and a lot of cultural attractions.
Berlin is the German capital since 1871. Its the largest city in the country and the second largest in EU (after London).

In 1200 the area of the present Berlin was occupied by two settlements Colln and Berlin. They united in 1307. In 1701, after the crowning of Fredrik III Berlin became royal residence city. In 1920s Berlin was one of the European cultural centres with intense theater, cinema and club life.

Everything changed in 1933 when Hitler came to power. The persecution of dissenters, Jews, the burning of books and total censorship didnt contribute to cultural development and artistic life. These years can be called the gloomiest in the whole Berlin history. After the World War II life didnt become much better in 1961 Berlin Wall was raised and divided city into two parts for long 28 years. Since 1989 there is once again united Germany and Berlin is once again its capital. Nowadays, its a highly developed, prosperous city a perfect place for living and not a less perfect place for rest.

What to see in Berlin? The heritage of several emperors and other Berlin rulers still adorns the city and remands of different pages in Berlin history. Above the above-mentioned Wall, there are Bradenburg Gates, built 1791. They became a part of Berlin Wall but after its fall were reopened. Another Berlin symbol is Reichstag in 1933 set on the fire by the Nazis. In 1970s the building was restored.

Berlin museums are harboring a lot of art treasures there is even Museum Island where you can visit The Old Museum (Altes Museum), The New Museum (Neues Museum), The Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie), Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, today called Bode Museum and Pergamon Museum.

And, finally, dont miss the main football arena - Olympic Stadium. It was built for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During World War II these buildings suffered little damage. Now it's the home arena of club Hertha BSC of BerlinGerman Cup's final match is held each year here. . It was also used for 3 matches in the 1974 Football World Cup. This year it will host six matches in the 2006 Football World Cup and was renovated for that reason.

Striking Barcelona

Barcelona is an elegant and dynamic city situated on the n North-East of Spain, on the Mediterranean coast. Being a capital of the Catalan province, Barcelona is an outstanding city. Its the most visited destination in Spain and its second largest city (after Madrid). Barcelona is also one of the major European port cities.

Barcelona todays popularity began in 1987 when its native Juan Antonio Samaranch, the head of the International Olympic Committee announced that the Olympic Games 1992 would be held in Barcelona. The preparations to the games and its holding brought a huge income to Barcelonas treasury. Barcelona is also known as a popular resort destination, due to its proximity to Costa Dorada and Costa Brava.

Although Barcelona is a part of Spain, its main features could be called Mediterranean the city looks more like Marseille, for example, than like Madrid. The architecture of Barcelona sometimes reminds of Milan.
Barcelona is the most vivid, the busiest city of Spain. Barcelona citizens are known for their art of art, music and celebrations.

Barcelona was founded by the Romans about 2000 years ago. Since its very beginning it was a connecting-link between Spain and the rest of Europe. Roman Empire ruled here for six centuries. They established their culture, language, laws and religion here. Then Spain was conquered by Moors, Barcelona was among the first who with the help of Francs managed to get rid of yoke. About 988 AD Barcelona proclaimed its independence and during Middle Ages its power grew a lot. In XVIII century Madrid became the leading city of the peninsula and united all other cities. Barcelona became a part of Spain, but even now, several centuries later, many Barcelona citizens believe that one day Catalonia will become an independent state. Recently hold referendum confirmed this state of public opinion Catalonia is to receive more self-dependence.

The image of the modern Barcelona is mostly formed by Antonio Gaudi. Youll never see corners and direct lines in his masterpieces all they seemed to be made by nature and only too bright colors and windows with frames let guess that they are the creatures of a human being. Each of the structures built by Gaudi can be called the symbol of Barcelona, but his unfinished cathedral La Sagrada Familia shines bright even in the row of his masterpieces.

When you get to Barcelona you surely shouldnt miss a chance to walk along the streets of its oldest part Barri Gotic. Here are saved the houses of XIII_XV centuries. The charm of this place is completed with up-to-date streets and shops of the neighboring districts. Barri Gotic is also a home of the Royal Palace, reminding of once capital status of Barcelona.

Portugal is a European country situated on the Iberian Peninsula in the southwest corner of Europe. The west and south of Portugal are cornered by the Atlantic Ocean, giving it some of the most dramatic coastline in Europe.

Portugal borders only one country, Spain, which makes up the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.

With a coastline running over 500 miles Portugal is bursting with scenic sandy coves and rocky cliffs with a dramatic inland landscape.

Portugal is a very pleasant country to visit - especially for any person in love with seafood. All along the coast are amazing restaurants dedicated to cooking fresh fish. Most restaurants are reasonable priced with generous portions. When you are having food in Portugal dont forget to sample the excellent local wine. While Portugal is noted for Port, excellent wines are home grown in regions north of Porto and Lisbon.

If you are in some of the more popular tourist spots its wise to make a reservation. Its also standard practice in Portugal to add a 5 - 10 percent tip for waiters who are poorly paid.

English is widely spoken throughout Portugal and the locals are extremely friendly. A large selection of English-written newspapers can be bought in most of the larger newsagents.

Portugal is a country rich in arts and history. The architecture of Portugal differs from region to region. The Romans were the first to leave behind their enhanced structural design. Muslim invaders from North Africa during the eight-century have also enriched the architecture in southern Portugal. Portugal is littered with incredible Churches, temples and old buildings. Some old buildings are restored and turned into great hotels.

Hotels in Portugal are plentiful in tourist areas and cities, but in the countryside they can be rare. If you are travelling through the Portuguese countryside plan your journey well in advance.

Sporting holidays can be had at any time of year. While the Portuguese are mainly into football, most marina sports can be sought along the entire coastline. If you are looking for a golfing holiday Portugal should be top of the list. Most of the best golf courses in Portugal are found in the Algarve region, which has a reputation as one of Europes top golfing destinations.

The Algarve region of Portugal, situated in the south of the country, is the perfect spot to visit at any time of year. Its climate stays warm all year round and the scenic coastline offers a large variety of marine activity.

Fishing is a valuable way of life for many in Portugal. Each year during the month of August a massive seafood festival is hosted by one of the ports in the Algarve.

If you are looking for a really special place to visit - try some of the Islands along the Portuguese coast. The Azores lie 800 miles west of Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Known for the peaceful way of life, the Azores volcanic history has left a truly magical landscape. With easy access from mainland Portugal, the Azores are well worth a visit.

Travel to Milan, Italy.

Milan is the business hub of Italy and a very busy city to visit at any time of year.

Home to the Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci, Milan has a rich history in art and has some of the most priceless works of art on display in its galleries. The art galleries of Milan also reflect the history of the city, but be advised, if you do plan to visit some of the galleries book in advance.

Milans main attraction, The Duomo is the third largest church in the world, and took nearly 450 years to build. The construction of the Duomo began in 1386 and was completed in 1805 by Napoleon. This fabulous Gothic style church is a must see for any tourist.

Built in 1386 the Castello Sforzesco is a massive fortress located in the centre of Milan. The Sforza has many great museums and hosts the work of many great artists including Michelangelo.

For the sporting fans a visit to the Meazza Stadium, better known as the San Siro should be rewarding. This is one of the best football stadiums in Italy. Daily visits to the San Siro are available with access to the stadium and changing rooms.

The winter months in Milan can be extremely cold, while the summers are very hot and humid.

A trip north to the Alps or to the lake region is very advisable, and should be most memorable. The Italian rail system is excellent, and daily trips to the lakes should not take too long. Hotel prices vary during the year - winter being an excellent time to visit.

Also known as one of the main fashion capitals of Italy, Milan hosts some of the best fashion designers in the world. Most of the main shopping outlets are located near the city centre. Expect very large crowds during the sales, which attract people from all over Europe.

Milan is well suited to cater for the needs of travellers. From the moment you arrive you will be met with an excellent transport system, both efficient and economical. Avoid travelling through the streets of Milan by car if possible - traffic can be chaotic.

Where possible its best to use the public transport system. If you must use a taxi be very careful , use official taxis, which are white or yellow in colour. These are a lot cheaper than the private cab who will charge you double the price.

Milan is a cosmopolitan city and offers a wide range of restaurants. Prices vary considerably from place to place. Restaurants are very crowded at weekends so book in advance where possible. Menus and prices are usually posted outside restaurants - its also standard to leave a small tip.
The main tourist season starts in Milan during the summer months, but this doesnt mean that cheap accommodation is available during the off-season. Milan is a very busy city all year round and hotel prices can be expensive.

Travel to Malta

Malta is set for her annual international air show to be the best ever this year, with tens of thousands of islanders and tourists attending the event over the weekend of September 23 and 24.

Making the event a truly international one, as well as the Armed Forces of Malta participating, the French, Italian, Dutch Swiss and Spanish will all have planes and crew in attendance, plus the British Royal Air Force and US Air Force.

Among the planes taking part are two Alpha jets from France, one of which will be doing an aerial display, six F-16's with two Dutch F-16's flying, and from the RAF two Harriers and two Tornados, with one of the Harriers expected to do an aerial demonstration.

Ticket prices for the Saturday or Sunday are low compared to many international air shows, ensuring access is available to many of the Maltese population as well as enthusiasts and veterans who travel from around Europe for the weekend. Prices this year are 4.5 Maltese (around US $12) for either day, with public transport to the show available throughout the island.

With the tourist season beginning to slow down, many of the hotels in Malta see the air show as a tourist attraction and organise transport to and from the event.

An advantage of holding the show in the second half of September is that the weather in Malta can almost be assured to be good, with the all important clear skies allowing viewing of the participating planes.

Malta Map

The air show is seen by many in the Malta holidays industry as evidence that Malta can produce events which will not only prove an attraction to those tourists already on the island, but also as part of a package of other attractions to draw new tourists to the island.

The first half of the year has been a disappointing one for the holiday to Malta industry, with a drop in tourists for the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year.

'Malta needs good news', they say, 'and if potential tourists could see on a map of Malta of events quality displays such as the air show it would be a good reason to visit the island.

The island needs to compete against other destinations in the Mediterranean, but while most of them are seeing an increase in visitor numbers, Malta is showing a drop'.

Many hoteliers and others in the holiday industry are hoping that cheap flights to Malta might become a reality in the near future. There has been talk of low cost carriers from the UK and Ireland providing services to the island for some time now, but no deals have been struck yet.

Unemployment on the island is high at over 8 per cent, and tourism is a major employer, but many feel that the government is reluctant to see the national carrier Air Malta face potentially subsidised competiton. But by doing nothing the island faces the danger of the whole tourist industry suffering.

'Malta can be a high quality destination with low cost fares', comment the travel guide. 'We already have good accommodation like the Malta Hilton, so potentially we can do it'.
